Cell Reprogramming for Aging

As we age, the brain gets less efficient and forgetfulness increases by leaps and bounds. Acquiring Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinsonism is not the case always but certain other degenerative proteins cite actions that decrease the brain efficiency. It is the cholinergic and dopaminergic neurons that begin the deleterious effect on the memory. Since the cholinergic neurotransmitters govern the actions at the basal ganglia of the brain, the neurodegenerative changes through normal aging begin their action.

Along with aging, the brain cells start being damaged and give rise to various mental disorders. No such medication has been invented that may completely cure the following ailments but delay the process. Similarly, aging can never be stopped but the consequences can be slowed down.

In the article Gene Therapy and Cell Reprogramming For the Aging Brain: Achievements and Promise the author has discussed aging and the effects of cholinergic and dopaminergic agonists and antagonists in a vast perspective. The article also features modification of cells with age and the mal-effects on diabetic patients. The journal Current Gene Therapy focuses on the gene and cell therapy. Moreover, the research tells much about the experimental evidence supporting the neuroprotective relevance of these and related factors in the aging brain.

Hepatitis and Interferon

Hepatitis is a viral disease that remains in the body for longer durations and even lifetime, depending upon the viral genotype.  It exists as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E, G and H. Hepatitis B and C are treated by interferon at variant doses in every individual. There is a slight chance from recovery from Hepatitis B but it has a vaccine. Hepatitis C is treatable yet chances of recurrence are strong because it does not have a vaccine.
Interferon has a binding affinity with the cellular proteins that in turns kills the viruses despite of their various shapes which may not be identified otherwise. The Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Interferon was studied with and without combination of ribavirin, administered between the range of 800g – 1400g thrice a week or daily. Sustained Virologic Response (SVR) and Rapid Virologic Response (RVR) exposure- response were modeled using logistic regression. The author of the article Population Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Albinterferon Alfa-2b in Patients Treated for Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 2/3 has detailed review on the genotype research and a comparison of efficacy of combined or individual regimens.

Also, Bentham Science Publishers has much more details on the viral hepatitis topics in their open access journals.

The Impact Of Sleep Apnea On Human Health:

Majority of people experience snoring issues while sleeping. In some cases, it can occur due to nasal blockages which result into oral grunts and groans. Similarly, some people suffer from breathing impairments or occasional exchange of gases during sleep. This is known as Sleep Apnea. "Sleep apnea is a common disease that has a powerful impact on public health because it greatly increases the risk of strokes, cancers and mortality from any cause," said lead author Nathaniel S. Marshall, PhD, senior lecturer in clinical trials at the University of Sydney in Australia.

Marshall, PhD, senior lecturer in clinical trials at the University of Sydney in Australia.Sleep Apnea can be classified into three types:
Ø  Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Ø  Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
Ø  Complex Sleep Apnea (Amalgamation of the above two)

The OSA can take place due to a physical obstruction in the respiratory tract, whereas, the main cause of CSA is the lack of respiratory effort. The combination of both of them is reported in a limited number of cases.

Despite of the fact that Sleep Apnea can happen to any age group or gender, this condition is more common in females. One of the Bentham Science Publishers articles “Influence of Gender on C-Reactive Protein, Fibrinogen, and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate in Obstructive Sleep Apnea.” covers all the details related to protein bindings with fibrinogens and erythrocytes sedimentation rates. This research also provides ample information explaining the systemic inflammatory markers relating it with female physiological activity which supports OSA more in females than males.

Cat Bite- A source of bacteria and several infections

Cat Bites are more serious and dangerous as compared to a dog bite. The research analysis has shown that 1 out of 3 patients wounded by cat bites died in hospital while two third of them had to go through surgical treatment.

This is because of the fact that the cats usually carry various types of bacteria in their mouth which causes infection in tissues, resulting into blood poisoning, also known as septicemia. The most common symptoms of these wound fissures at an early stage include flu and fever and under rare circumstances can lead to patient`s death if the medical treatment is not taken out at the appropriate time.

Several safety measures should be taken in the above case in order to prevent the infection from spreading to surrounding tissues and joints. Cleaning the wound is the first and prime requirement, but scrubbing should be avoided. It is also important to control and stop bleeding by seeking medical attention through a physician.

Bentham Science Publishers is a remarkable name in the STM publishing industry. There are a number of Bentham publications on infection and infectious diseases, such as Anti-Infective Agents, Infectious Disorders-Drug Targets and Recent Patents on Anti-Infective Drug Discovery. Heavy Drinking:

The intake of excessive drinking can result in accelerated memory loss as well as mental decay. Premature Old Age can also be a symptom of heavy drinking.
Men who consume more than two alcoholic drinks per day during their middle age may speed up the process of memory loss and premature old age up to six years.
Research has deduced that middle-aged men are at higher risk of mental decay, because they are involved in heavy drinking for many years.

Bentham Science Publishers is one of the leading STM publishing companies of the industry. It publishes more than 116 online and print journals and more than 300 eBooks. One of its journals is “Current drug Abuse Reviews.” Current Drug Abuse Reviews aim to publish the highest quality reviews, meta-analyses and drug clinical trial studies on all latest advances on alcohol and drug abuse and addiction.

Google Lenses for Diabetes

For diabetic patients tired with having to use pin prick blood tests every now and then to monitor their blood sugar levels, the good news is that Google has invented a novel pair of contact lenses to keep their glucose levels in check. These contacts come fitted with special sensors, minute transistors and a tiny hair-thin antenna to observe the sugar levels through the tears of the diabetes patient. The readings are then wirelessly transmitted to a handheld monitor device.

Unmanageable blood sugar levels in diabetic patients are hazardous to health and more often than not lead to kidney, eyes and heart problems. Many patients have to administer pin pricks, sometimes more than 10 times in a single day in order to keep an eye on their glucose levels, as is evident from the case of Michael Vahradian, who finds it rather cumbersome to use them. Google lens, which will be available in markets in about 5 years, will revolutionize the way diabetes blood sugar levels are monitored and will ease the process for millions around the world.
Google is best known as a search engine and advertising company. However, it has launched a number of other useful wearable products, like Google Glass and a special pair of glasses fitted with cameras and a small computer display. Although, research on contact lenses for monitoring blood sugar levels started many years ago at the University of Washington, it was Google really which made the project a reality. The man behind the invention, Brian Otis expresses his opinion:
“You can take it to a certain level in an academic setting, but at Google we were given the latitude to invest in this project.”
The Chairperson of the board of the American Diabetes Association is pleased with the efforts of the researchers and scientists who are working tirelessly to come up with novel and better solutions for patients suffering from diabetes. Readers can refer to Current Diabetes Reviews by Bentham Science Publishers for the latest developments in the field of diabetes and its cures. A Bentham eBook, Epidemiology of Type 2 Diabetes is also a useful guide on diabetes epidemiology.
